Please welcome Lael Montgomery to the professional staff of arbiters at the Judicial Arbiter Group!

Lael Montgomery joined the Judicial Arbiter Group in February 2012 after fifteen years on the bench of the Twentieth Judicial District in Boulder, Colorado.
Judge Montgomery was born in Livingston, Montana, and graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in philosophy, and from the University of Colorado School of Law. While in law school she was the Casenote and Comment editor of the Law Review and won the Law Review’s Scribe Award. She was also awarded a Legal Writing Fellowship. Upon graduation in 1982, she began her career in public service as a deputy district attorney.
Judge Montgomery was appointed to the Boulder County Court bench in 1997 and to the District Court bench in 2001. As a district court judge she presided over civil, probate, domestic, criminal, and juvenile dockets. She has tried many complex civil cases including multi-state and Colorado class actions, business disputes, medical malpractice, and construction defect cases. She was Boulder’s probate judge for two years and has been recognized for her work in family law. She was appointed by the Chief Justice to the Supreme Court Standing Committee on Family Issues at its inception and was later chair of that committee.
Judge Montgomery was awarded the Distinguished Jurist Award by the Colorado chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the Community Service Award by the Boulder Interdisciplinary Committee. During her time on the bench, Judge Montgomery was active on many committees that sought to improve the justice system for the people it served. She was a member of the Boulder County Mental Health/Criminal Justice Task Force, the Boulder County Bar Association Professionalism Committee, the Boulder County Bar Association Bar – Media Committee, and was appointed by the Chief Justice to the statewide Colorado Respondent Parents’ Counsel Task Force.
Judge Montgomery and her husband have four children and reside in Boulder, Colorado.
